A motion to overturn Calgary’s controversial blanket rezoning bylaw will come before city hall next week, with members of the executive committee set to debate the proposal.

The motion—backed by Mayor Jeromy Farkas and six councillors—argues that the blanket rezoning initiative “cut thousands of Calgarians out of having a direct say on the future redevelopment of their communities.” It also criticizes the city’s public engagement process, noting that the bylaw’s 15-day consultation period drew input from just over 1,000 residents.

Supporters of the repeal contend that the rezoning plan strains aging infrastructure, increases traffic in established neighbourhoods, and fails to account for how added density will affect transit, parks, and community amenities. They also say the policy threatens the character of long-standing residential areas.

The motion further claims that the rezoning has contributed to “traffic congestion created due to excessive blue, black and green carts in alleys and roads,” pointing to waste-collection impacts as another concern requiring reconsideration.

The executive committee will review the proposal next week, setting up what is expected to be a contentious debate at city hall.
