Danielle Smith faced pointed questions from reporters Friday after unveiling plans for a provincewide referendum focused on immigration and provincial autonomy.

Speaking in Calgary, Smith outlined what she described as mounting pressures on Alberta’s social services due to rapid population growth. While emphasizing that Alberta has long been a destination for newcomers, she said the current pace of migration is unprecedented.

“The province has attracted new arrivals for generations. We’ve got a strong economy, lower living costs and a quality of life that’s pretty irresistible as a package,” Smith said. “What’s different now is the speed and scale of this growth and the impact it’s had on services.”

Smith referenced feedback gathered during last year’s Alberta Next panel discussions, where she said many residents voiced frustration over strained public systems.

“Albertans are frustrated that their kids’ education is being affected. They’re frustrated that their teenagers can’t find part-time jobs. They’re frustrated that it’s harder and harder to find an affordable place to live,” she said.

In a 13-minute televised address Thursday evening, Smith placed much of the blame for these challenges on the immigration policies of the previous federal government, arguing Alberta needs greater control to manage growth and protect public services.
