A perfect symbiosis of jazz and traditional Pakistani music, The Sachal Ensemble performs Song of Lahore – inspired by the acclaimed documentary film of the same name. The cross-cultural music features iconic songs by Duke Ellington, The Beatles, Dave Brubeck, Henry Mancini, and Richard Rodgers as well as traditional Pakistani folk songs.
The Sachal Ensemble sprung from the city of Lahore, a city with a rich cultural history and thriving mecca for the arts for over 100 years. In 1977, the establishment of a conservative Islamic regime and Sharia law in Pakistan created an unwelcome atmosphere for all but religious music, forcing respected musicians to hide their instruments, and turn away from their livelihood. The Sachal Ensemble tells this story as it is best told, through the powerful and uniquely beautiful music of multicultural collaboration.
“The joyous sound of three percussionists from the Indian subcontinent cutting loose, in a similar way to the freedom John McLaughlin used to give his fellow band-members in Shakti and Shakti remembered, had an effect which was both invigorating and hypnotic.” – London Jazz News
