When an upper-class European girl is found murdered on the seedy side of Kowloon, ambitious Chinese police detective Tommy Lam is on the case. But faced with corruption and the prejudice of his superiors, how far will Tommy go in the pursuit of justice? Join us for the World Premiere of this new Canadian crime thriller developed by Vertigo Theatre, Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre and Gateway Theatre. Vertigo Theatre Artistic Director Craig Hall directs a cast of diverse actors from across Canada, with CBC’s Kim’s Convenience actor John Ng in the lead role of detective-sergeant Tommy Lam:
“There is something special about this play, Hall says. ”I have been saying that since Jovanni brought me an early draft over four years ago. Back then I thought the play was special because of its fascinating setting, its complex lead characters, its poignant examination of cultural identity and the opportunity it offered to begin addressing the lack of cultural diversity on our stage. After four years of development the play is still special for all of those reasons, but I would suggest that it is now an exceptional genre play as well. It has been a pleasure to collaborate with Jovanni on honing his original crime thriller. It will be an even greater thrill to finally showcase the work for audiences in three cities.”
NINE DRAGONS stars John Ng as Tommy Lam, Daniel Chen as Victor Fung/Hong, Toby Hughes as Sean Heaney, Natascha Girgis as Dr. Mary Weir, Scott Bellis as Paul Beverley/Johnson, and Duval Lang as Nigel Dunston-Smith/Henderson.
NINE DRAGONS is directed by Vertigo Theatre Artistic Director Craig Hall, Assistant Director Jenna Rodgers, Set Designer Scott Reid, Projection Designer Jamie Nesbitt, Costume Designer Deitra Kalyn, Lighting Designer Anton de Groot, Composer/Sound Designer Andrew Blizzard, Fight Director Karl Sine, Stage Manager Michael Howard, Assistant Stage Manager Ruby Dawn Eustaquio, Apprentice Stage Manager Melanie Crawford, with Voice/Dialect Coach Jane Macfarlane and Cantonese Translations by Derek Chan. Vertigo Theatre is pleased to partner with the Asian Heritage Foundation (AHF) as a venue host for their MISSING CHAPTERS exhibit during the run of NINE DRAGONS.
