Calgary, Alberta – Canada’s Parliamentary Budget Officer, Yves Giroux, is urging Prime Minister Mark Carney to release an updated snapshot of the federal finances soon, warning that further delay could dent investor confidence.

Carney has pledged to pour billions into infrastructure, defence purchases, housing and transit as part of an aggressive plan to lift Canada’s economic potential. Paired with sluggish growth, those outlays have economists projecting a wider deficit for the current fiscal year.

Even so, the prime minister has pushed the budget presentation to October, citing the trade war and a shortened spring sitting of Parliament ahead of an election—though budgets are normally tabled in March or April.

Giroux said the government should provide at least an economic and fiscal update to outline its way forward.
