Calgary, Alberta _ After more than ten years without it, Calgary has officially reintroduced fluoride into its municipal drinking water system.
As of Monday, the City of Calgary began adding fluoride at a concentration of 0.7 milligrams per litre — the level recommended by Health Canada to help reduce tooth decay.
Although fluoride naturally exists in water at lower levels, Calgary first started manually fluoridating its water in 1991. The practice was halted in 2011 when city council voted to discontinue it.
The decision to bring fluoride back followed a 2021 municipal election plebiscite, where 62 per cent of voters supported reintroducing it.
To support the change, the city committed $28.1 million to upgrade infrastructure required for fluoridation. Ongoing annual costs for maintenance and operation are projected to be around $1 million.
With this move, Calgary aligns itself with many other Canadian and international cities that support fluoridated water as a public health measure.
