Jeromy Farkas has been officially declared Calgary’s next mayor following a recount of votes from the October 20 municipal election.

Updated results released by Elections Calgary on Tuesday show Farkas securing victory by 616 votes over runner-up Sonya Sharp, slightly increasing his margin from the initial count of 581 votes.

Sharp requested the recount, saying it was intended to ensure transparency and confidence in the democratic process. Calgary’s returning officer approved the request after determining the margin of victory fell within the 0.5 per cent threshold required for a recount.

The recount began Monday morning, one week after Calgarians went to the polls. In total, 349,815 ballots were counted, representing a voter turnout of 39.04 per cent.

Farkas and the newly elected city council will be sworn in at City Hall on Wednesday.
