Calgary’s newly elected city council and mayor were sworn in Wednesday, marking the start of a new four-year term at City Hall.

Jeromy Farkas officially became Calgary’s new mayor after a recount confirmed his razor-thin victory over runner-up Sonya Sharp. The final tally showed Farkas winning by just 616 votes — 35 more than the election night results.

“I’m really excited to get to work on behalf of Calgarians with this brand new team,” Farkas said following the ceremony.

Sharp conceded the race Wednesday in a video posted to social media, saying that while the result wasn’t what she hoped for, she was proud to be part of a historic mayoral campaign. She used the moment to restate her key priorities, including repealing blanket rezoning and increasing police staffing.

“This was never about partisan politics, and it’s unfortunate that misinformation prevailed,” Sharp said. “This was about delivering a to-do list to get Calgary back on track.”

As for her next steps, Sharp offered few details but hinted she’s not stepping away from public life.

“To Calgarians, it’s been an honour to serve this city for 24 years, and I promise I’ll keep fighting for a safe, strong, and sensible Calgary for all of us. See you soon,” she said.
