Calgary, Alberta – Alberta Health Services (AHS) is warning travellers that they may have been exposed to measles in Calgary’s domestic terminal on Wednesday morning.
Health officials say the virus can remain airborne for several hours, so you could be at risk even if you never came face-to-face with the infected individual.
According to AHS, the person with a confirmed measles infection landed from Kamloops and reached Gate A17 shortly after 8 a.m. They later boarded WestJet Flight 630 to Prince Edward Island, departing from Gate C55.
Infectious-disease specialists note that measles is the single most contagious virus they encounter. While illnesses such as COVID-19 or influenza typically require someone to inhale dozens of viral particles, a solitary measles particle can trigger infection.
The alert comes as Alberta confirms 27 additional cases, pushing the outbreak total past 1,100. The South Health Zone continues to report the majority of infections, now tallying 719 cases.
