The Filipino Edition – Hosted by Reth Barnachea “aka” Juan Manila

Mondays from 10PM – Midnight

Juan Manila”, host of RED FM’s Filipino Edition is one busy guy! We recently took some time to sit down with him to ask about the show and himself, here’s the interview:

What is The Filipino Edition show all about?

The objective of the show is to entertain with original Filipino music, preserve and develop the rich cultural heritage of Filipinos in Calgary and to promote the values and strengths of Filipino-Canadian families. We talk about ongoing current events in Calgary, and in our homeland. The Filipino Edition supports Calgary’s local artists and celebrates the Filipino language on air. The Filipino Edition is a reflection of Filipinos all over the world.

Tell us your short profile. What is your media background?

I was born and raised in Manila, Philippines. I graduated from Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, and I am a member of ASET in Alberta. I used to represent my University in competitions of Public Speaking activities.

I am currently the President of the FCBROS (FilCanadian Broadcaster’s Society), and the Chairman of PIOCC (Philippine Independence Organizing Committee of Calgary). I used to be the Chairman of Pioneers Club of Calgary. I started broadcasting in 2002 at the University of Calgary’s Station CJSW for the FilCanadian Community. In 2006, I started a Filipino Radio show called “Radio Pinoy” and a TV show called “Pinoy TV” in Calgary.

I also promote Filipino concerts, Events and Cultural celebrations and I love serving the FilCanadian community in Calgary.

filipinoeditionTell us about a memorable show that you’ve hosted:

There are lots of memorable shows that I’ve hosted, but the closest to my heart is when I was able to bridge the gap between Canada our homeland for our Filipino brothers and sisters in need. During that show, through broadcasting and announcements, the Filipino community was able to collect $40k to help the Red Cross support the Yolanda Victims in The Philippines.

Do you have anything to say in closing?

As a host, my objective as a Filipino Broadcaster is to help and serve the FilCanadian community. The Filipino Edition has been blessed to be a part of the fastest growing community in Calgary. I pledge to give the best presentation possible during every show on-air and I will always love interacting with FilCanadian listeners.
