An 18-year-old man has been charged in connection with a stabbing that occurred on the Calgary Stampede Midway last month, leaving three people injured.
The incident took place just after 11 p.m. on Tuesday, July 8, near the Euroslide ride inside the Stampede grounds. Police responded to reports of a stabbing and found a man in medical distress. He was transported to hospital in life-threatening condition but has since been released and is now in stable condition.
Shortly afterward, police were called to two other locations where additional victims were found: a youth near 17 Avenue SW and Macleod Trail SE, and another man near Erlton Street SW and 27 Avenue SW. Both were also taken to hospital in serious but stable condition.
Investigators later confirmed all three individuals had been stabbed during the same incident near the Euroslide.
According to Acting Inspector Scott Campbell of the Calgary Police Service, the altercation stemmed from a prior verbal dispute between two groups who were familiar with each other through school. “Once they saw each other again, it transpired into a more serious incident,” he said.
Following an investigation that involved reviewing security footage and interviewing witnesses, police identified a suspect. A search warrant was executed at a Calgary residence, where officers seized a folding knife and clothing matching what the suspect was seen wearing at the time of the incident.
Irfan Mohammadi, 18, has been charged with three counts of aggravated assault. Police say he was not previously known to them.
Mohammad is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.
