Police in Calgary say a large quantity of suspected crystal meth, valued at more than $780,000, was intercepted at Calgary International Airport (YYC) earlier this week.

The seizure was made around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday by the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority during routine screening. Officers discovered three individually wrapped packages weighing a total of 15.5 kilograms hidden inside a checked bag.

Authorities say the “crystal-like substance” is believed to be crystal meth, though testing is ongoing to confirm its composition.

A suspect was arrested aboard a Vancouver-bound flight, with police indicating the individual’s final destination was likely New Zealand via connecting flights.

The accused, Lloyd Tei Mataafa, 38, has been charged with possession of methamphetamine for the purpose of trafficking and possession for the purpose of exporting drugs. He is scheduled to appear in a Calgary courtroom on Friday.
