Calgary, Alberta – Frustrated by a decade of federal policies seen as harmful to Alberta’s economy, the Government of Alberta has launched the Alberta Next Panel, chaired by Premier Danielle Smith. The panel will consult with Albertans over the summer and fall, gathering input on how the province can assert its interests within a united Canada.

The 14-member panel includes MLAs, business leaders, economists, health professionals, and community advocates. Its mandate includes exploring big-picture ideas such as establishing an Alberta Pension Plan, transitioning to a provincial police service, immigration reform, income tax collection, and constitutional changes.

Premier Smith said the panel is about “action, not just talk,” giving Albertans a direct say in shaping the province’s future. The group will also consider potential referendum questions for 2026.

Panelist Adam Legge, president of the Business Council of Alberta, emphasized the need to restore fairness within Confederation, stating this initiative is about building “a stronger Alberta within a united Canada.”

Public town halls and engagement opportunities will be announced at Alberta.ca/Next, with the panel’s final recommendations expected by December 31, 2025.

Albertans are invited to contribute ideas and participate in deciding: What’s next for Alberta?
