Calgary, Alberta — Calgary police have confirmed that two people, including a 9-year-old girl, have died following a house fire early Thursday morning in the city’s northeast.

Investigators say the second victim was a man in his 50s.

The Calgary Fire Department responded to reports of a fire on Taralake Way NE shortly before 1:30 a.m., after a neighbour called 911.

Battalion Chief Scott Cowan said six people were inside the home when the fire broke out. The man was found dead inside by first responders. Firefighters also rescued the young girl from the house; she was rushed to Alberta Children’s Hospital in critical condition but later succumbed to her injuries.

Meanwhile, an adult and a teenager on the second floor escaped by breaking a window and climbing onto the roof, where firefighters helped them down. Both were taken to hospital and are listed in serious but stable condition — one at Foothills Hospital and the other at Alberta Children’s Hospital.

Two other adults, who were in the basement, were able to exit the house safely after noticing smoke.

Authorities say the fire does not appear to be criminal in nature.
