Mohit Sandhu, 23, charged in teen’s fatal poisoning, faces additional kidnapping charges

South Alberta resident 23-year-old Mohit Sandhu is facing first-degree murder charges in connection with the 2020 death of 18-year-old Sahil Grewal, who died after ingesting a mixture of fentanyl and cough syrup. However, Sandhu is also accused of being behind a kidnapping linked to organized crime and drug trafficking.

While Grewal’s death was originally thought to be the result of an overdose, police now believe Sandhu’s true target was Jaskaran Sidhu, a man recently sentenced to life in prison for his role in a 2019 double homicide. As a result, Sandhu is also facing attempted murder charges related to the poisoning.

Sandhu was back in court on Friday for his trial regarding the kidnapping of Hamza Yassin in 2023. He faces charges of instructing an indictable offence, robbery, and extortion, with allegations suggesting that Sandhu orchestrated the abduction.

Yusuf Yassin and Tariq Yassin, Hamza’s brother, worked with law enforcement to negotiate Hamza’s release. A $50,000 ransom was agreed upon between the kidnappers and the Yassins, with the money being sent to Sandhu’s lawyer’s account on July 5, the day after the kidnapping took place. Sandhu’s defense lawyer, Kristofer Advent, who is with Beresh Law, denied any wrongdoing related to the ransom payment.

In addition to Sandhu, three other men—Salah Aden, Mustafa Saeed, and Brandon Power—are also facing charges related to the kidnapping, including kidnapping, firearms offenses, robbery, and assault. Their trials are proceeding separately.

Prosecutor Donna Spaner has yet to call Hamza Yassin to testify, and the trial is expected to continue next week.
