Calgary Transit passengers will now be required to scan their mobile tickets before boarding any CTrain, beginning Wednesday. The change aligns train boarding rules with existing protocols already in place for Calgary Transit buses.

Transit officials say the move comes in response to fare evasion concerns. Recent studies revealed that 46 per cent of adult riders and half of youth passengers were either not using their tickets properly or weren’t paying at all.

To help riders adjust, Calgary Transit is introducing a grace period before enforcement begins.

“Once we’re confident that the public understands how to use the system, we will move forward with enforcement,” said Chief Marcia Gonder of the City of Calgary’s public vehicle standards section.

Electronic mobile ticketing was initially launched in 2020.
