As the Alberta government moves ahead with its plan to establish a provincial police service, the new Commanding Officer of the RCMP in Alberta says he’s watching the process with interest — and hopes to be part of the conversation.
Trevor Daroux, who recently took on the top RCMP role in the province, told 660 News Radio Calgary that while discussions are still in the early stages, he expects future collaboration as plans take shape.
“We haven’t [been involved] as of yet, but it’s very new in its implementation,” said Daroux. “With the new chief just being announced, I suspect those opportunities will come.”
In early July, the province took a significant step by appointing former Calgary police deputy chief Sat Parhar to lead the new Alberta Sheriffs Police Service — a proposed province-wide policing alternative. Once operational, municipalities would have the option to contract the new agency instead of the RCMP.
Daroux says many details of the plan remain unclear, particularly regarding which areas the new agency will focus on. However, he anticipates working alongside Chief Parhar to ensure smooth coordination between the two forces.
“There’s lots of opportunity to combine efforts to enhance safety in our communities,” Daroux said. “But it’s also important to have a clear distinction between the roles of each agency to avoid duplication and ensure we’re maximizing our impact.”
He also emphasized the need for transparency and public involvement as the province moves forward with its plan.
“It’s very important that communities have a choice,” he said. “But they also need to be grounded in accurate, comprehensive information — and that’s been a bit of a challenge. Policing and community safety are complex, and there isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution.”
Daroux brings 37 years of policing experience to his role, including time as deputy chief of Calgary Police, where he led the bureau of community policing before retiring in 2017.
