A prolonged rainfall event prompted Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) to issue a rainfall warning for Calgary and surrounding areas late Monday.

In its initial statement, ECCC forecasted up to 50 millimetres of rain for some communities, particularly those west of the city, by Tuesday evening.

By Tuesday morning, the federal agency updated its advisory, confirming that heavy rainfall would persist throughout the day. It also warned of potential localized flooding in low-lying areas.

The rain is the result of two moisture-laden systems—one moving in from the northwest and the other from the south—merging over southern Alberta. Initially, the systems stalled over the foothills west of Calgary on Monday night, producing isolated downpours. As they merged, the weather system expanded, bringing widespread rain north and south of Calgary and extending eastward past the QEII and Highway 2.

Complicating matters, the region had already been drenched days earlier. Between Thursday and Sunday, Calgary and nearby communities received significant precipitation, with some areas seeing over 60 millimetres. At Calgary International Airport, ECCC recorded just over 50 millimetres. The back-to-back storms have saturated the ground, increasing the risk of flash flooding and pooling water.

Conditions are expected to improve gradually through Tuesday afternoon, and the rainfall warning is anticipated to be lifted later in the day.
