Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for large portions of central and northern Alberta, including cities such as Airdrie, Edmonton, and Athabasca. The alert was issued Thursday morning as forecasters warned of unstable atmospheric conditions capable of producing strong storms.
Thunderstorms are expected to develop Thursday afternoon and may become severe, bringing the risk of heavy downpours, damaging wind gusts, and large hail. In some cases, officials say the storms could even produce tornadoes.
“Thunderstorms that do form will track eastward or southwestward through the evening and overnight,” ECCC said in its advisory.
Residents are advised to stay alert as conditions may change rapidly. Strong wind gusts can damage buildings, uproot trees, and overturn high-profile vehicles. Large hail may cause significant property damage and pose a risk of injury. ECCC issues thunderstorm watches when conditions are favourable for storms capable of producing these hazardous effects.
Although Calgary narrowly falls outside the watch area, forecasters say the city still faces a 30 per cent chance of showers and a risk of thunderstorms later in the day. Friday also carries a 60 per cent chance of rain across parts of Alberta, with continued thunderstorm potential.
Officials are urging Albertans to monitor weather alerts closely and take shelter immediately if threatening weather approaches. The public is also reminded to secure outdoor objects that could be blown around by strong winds and to avoid unnecessary travel during storm conditions.
The thunderstorm watch remains in effect as of Thursday afternoon and may be updated as weather systems continue to develop.
