A candidates’ debate is set for tonight in Camrose, the largest municipality in the Battle River–Crowfoot riding, as the race to fill the federal seat heats up ahead of the August 18 byelection.

Among the ten candidates confirmed to take part is Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, whose attendance was confirmed by his press secretary, Sarah Fischer. The event is being hosted by the Camrose & District Chamber of Commerce.

Poilievre is vying to secure a seat in the House of Commons after losing his longtime Ottawa-area riding of Carleton in April’s general election. The byelection in Battle River–Crowfoot was triggered last month when Conservative MP Damien Kurek—who had comfortably won the seat in April—stepped down to allow Poilievre to run.

As of Monday, Elections Canada listed approximately 210 registered candidates in the race, including Liberal nominee Darcy Spady, NDP candidate Katherine Swampy, Independent Bonnie Critchley, and scores of others backed by the Longest Ballot Committee—a protest initiative aimed at drawing attention to democratic reform.

Due to the unusually large number of names, Elections Canada says it will provide adapted ballots at polling stations, allowing voters to write in the name of their chosen candidate.
