Powerful low-pressure system brings heavy rain to Alberta

A strong low-pressure system has settled over central Alberta and is expected to dominate the province’s weather for the next 48 hours.

High-pressure systems on either side are anchoring the low in place, allowing it to pull in moisture from the Pacific. As the system spins counter-clockwise, it will also draw in colder air from the north, setting the stage for significant rainfall across a wide area.

Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued rainfall warnings for regions west of Edmonton, where between 50 and 75 millimetres of rain could fall. The agency noted that thunderstorms expected this afternoon and evening may increase rainfall totals in some areas.

Rainfall is forecast to begin easing by tonight and into early Friday for the hardest-hit areas.

On Thursday, the system will slowly shift south and east, spreading rain and possible thunderstorms along the foothills and into central and southern Alberta — potentially reaching as far south as Calgary.
