Alberta’s public health authority is warning the public to avoid swimming or wading in Cove Beach at Chestermere Lake after tests revealed high levels of fecal bacteria.

According to Alberta Health Services (AHS), the contamination poses a risk of gastrointestinal illnesses such as vomiting and diarrhea if the water is swallowed. Contact with the water may also lead to skin, ear, and eye infections.

The advisory applies only to Cove Beach and does not affect other beaches on Chestermere Lake, including Anniversary Park and Sunset Park.

AHS reminds visitors and residents never to drink or cook with untreated water from any lake or reservoir. Water quality at Cove Beach will continue to be monitored, and the advisory will stay in place until further notice.
