Prime Minister Mark Carney says Israel’s newly announced plan to seize part of the Gaza Strip will worsen the humanitarian crisis for both Palestinians and hostages.
Earlier today, Israel’s cabinet approved a plan to take control of Gaza City. The country’s foreign ministry insists the move is not an attempt to permanently occupy Palestinian territory, but rather to eliminate Hamas.
The United Nations has condemned the decision as a dangerous escalation, warning it would likely involve a large-scale ground invasion and force tens of thousands of civilians from their homes.
The cabinet’s approval follows recent remarks from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that Israel would take full control of the Palestinian territory.
Carney called the takeover “wrong” and reaffirmed Canada’s position that a ceasefire is needed in Gaza, while maintaining that Hamas must not govern the area.
Meanwhile, Germany announced it will block exports of military equipment that could be used in Gaza — a policy Canada has already enforced since last year.
