Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek is urging Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberal government to designate the Prairie Economic Gateway as a project of national importance under Bill C-5.

A joint initiative between Calgary and Rocky View County, the proposed inland terminal would position Calgary as a key supply chain and manufacturing hub for Western Canada and beyond.

Located near major transportation routes and CPKC rail lines, the project is expected to generate $7 billion in economic activity and 30,000 jobs over 10 years.

Gondek says the Gateway aligns with the goals of Bill C-5 by boosting Canada’s economic autonomy and reducing reliance on U.S. exports.

The legislation allows Ottawa to fast-track major infrastructure projects, though it has faced criticism from Indigenous leaders over lack of consultation.

Gondek, who recently launched her re-election campaign, highlights the Gateway as a major achievement and calls for federal recognition to accelerate its development.
