Two Calgary residents are facing more than 50 charges following a nearly year-long investigation into the trafficking of stolen utility trailers, police say.
The investigation began in October 2024 after reports surfaced of two individuals selling trailers online. Between October 2023 and December 2024, nine trailers were stolen from locations across Calgary and Cochrane. Police allege the trailers were sold online using fraudulent vehicle identification numbers (VINs) to unsuspecting buyers.
A search warrant executed at a home in the 8000 block of 34 Avenue NW led officers to seize 191 identity documents, trailer re-vinning equipment, a stolen .22 calibre rifle linked to a previous break-and-enter, and ammunition.
Police say all nine trailers were recovered between November 2024 and August 2025 and returned to their rightful owners. However, the victims collectively lost an estimated $77,500.
Samantha Bremner, 40, is charged with 36 offences, including nine counts each of possession of stolen property over $5,000 and fraud over $5,000, along with multiple counts related to stolen property, firearms, credit cards, and identity documents.
Gunther Shwarten, 39, faces 20 charges, including five counts each of trafficking stolen property and fraud over $5,000, as well as possession of proceeds of crime over $5,000 and theft under $5,000.
Both accused are scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.
