The petition is part of the Forever Canadian initiative, launched earlier this month in Edmonton by former Progressive Conservative deputy premier Thomas Lukaszuk. The campaign received Elections Alberta’s approval under the Citizens Initiative Act to collect signatures.
The question put to voters is straightforward: “Do you agree that Alberta should remain in Canada?”
Forever Canadian has 90 days to gather 293,967 signatures — representing 10 per cent of all registered provincial voters — in order to present the petition to the legislature.
The group hopes to convince the provincial government to adopt a clear policy rejecting separatism, without requiring a referendum.
Many see the petition as a counter to the Alberta Prosperity Project, which earlier this year sought to hold a vote on Alberta’s separation. That application is now before the courts, after Chief Electoral Officer Gordon McClure asked a judge to rule on its constitutionality.
Premier Danielle Smith and Justice Minister Mickey Amery have urged Elections Alberta to approve the separatist petition, a move Lukaszuk has criticized.
Lukaszuk says the government’s intervention has energized Forever Canadian’s supporters. According to him, more than 8,000 volunteers have joined the effort, canvassing door-to-door, setting up small pop-up stations, and hosting events to gather signatures.
This week, Calgary residents will see several opportunities to sign in person, as the group pushes to meet its ambitious goal before the 90-day deadline.
