Many Calgary residents may not realize there’s a city bylaw concerning a potentially dangerous weed that could be growing on their property.
Known as “foxtail,” this plant is part of the natural ecosystem but can pose serious health risks to dogs if ingested — and in severe cases, it can be fatal.
The City of Calgary’s website notes that foxtail barley is a native species that commonly grows in disturbed areas, such as construction sites and roadsides.
Angela Hendry, a resident of Queensland, says she takes great pride in her flower garden and often receives compliments from neighbours. However, last week she was surprised when city bylaw officers came to her door —not with praise, but with a citation.
“They told me there had been a complaint about foxtail,” Hendry said, adding she was shocked to discover the weed growing in her back alley.
