A truck driver is dead after a fiery collision on the Trans-Canada highway near Strathmore, East of Calgary, that shut down traffic for several hours on Monday afternoon.
Emergency crews responded to the scene around 2:30 p.m. at highway 1 and Wheatland Trail following reports of a crash involving a semi-truck and an SUV.
According to RCMP, the semi-truck caught fire after the crash. a passenger managed to escape, but the 24-year-old driver from Ontario was trapped inside and pronounced dead at the scene.
Paramedics transported two other individuals to hospital in critical condition.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation. highway 1 remains closed in both directions at Wheatland Trail, and drivers are being advised to use alternate routes.
