Air Canada says passengers whose travel plans were disrupted by recent labour action can now apply for reimbursement through a form on its website.

The airline says the form should only be filled out by customers who booked directly with Air Canada and either completed part of their trip with the carrier or needed to pay for an alternative mode of transportation.

Travellers who booked through Aeroplan, a travel agency, an online booking site, or another airline are asked not to use the form.

Under Canada’s Air Passenger Protection Regulations (APPR), Air Canada must offer passengers either an alternative flight at no extra cost or a refund if service is disrupted by a strike.

Gábor Lukács, president of Air Passenger Rights, says international travellers may also qualify for compensation under the Montreal Convention. That treaty allows passengers to claim up to $12,500 if they can demonstrate financial losses tied to the disruption.

Hundreds of thousands of customers were affected when more than 10,000 flight attendants walked off the job. Flights began resuming Tuesday afternoon after the airline reached a tentative agreement with the union.
