A tour bus traveling from Niagara Falls to New York City crashed on Interstate 90 near Pembroke, about 25 miles east of Buffalo, on Friday, resulting in multiple fatalities and injuries, according to New York State Police.

Trooper James O’Callahan confirmed that there were “multiple fatalities, entrapments, and injuries” at the scene. The cause of the crash has not yet been determined. Photos shared by bystanders showed the bus rolled onto its side just off the highway.

Emergency responders, including ambulances and six medical helicopters, transported victims to hospitals across the region. By 2:10 p.m., Erie County Medical Center (ECMC) had received at least eight patients.

Powell Stephens, a witness who drove past the crash, described seeing glass and personal belongings scattered across the road, with shattered windows throughout the bus.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul said she was briefed on the “tragic tour bus accident” and that her office is coordinating with local and state authorities.

Mercy Flight, which deployed three helicopters, described the crash site as “a very active scene.” President Margaret Ferrentino said, “At this time, we’re praying for the victims.”

The New York State Thruway Authority has closed a significant portion of I-90 in both directions and is urging drivers to avoid the area.
