The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has extended contracts for approximately 850 call centre employees whose terms were previously set to end in September.
According to CRA spokesperson Etienne Biram, the workers were notified of the decision last week, following growing concerns about staffing shortages.
The move comes as the Union of Taxation Employees (UTE), which represents CRA workers, raises alarm over the state of service delivery. UTE recently launched an online campaign protesting ongoing staffing reductions, which it says have severely impacted operations.
Marc Brière, national president of the union, revealed that roughly 3,300 call centre employees have left or lost their positions over the past year, resulting in longer wait times and an increase in dropped calls for Canadians seeking assistance.
Brière said the union’s campaign aims to pressure the federal government to halt further cuts, protect existing call centre jobs, and rehire staff to restore service quality. He stressed that staffing levels are currently “too low” and that Canadians are feeling the effects.
Biram acknowledged that recent budget constraints have forced the CRA to reassess its workforce, but the agency is working to maintain essential services amid fiscal pressures.
