A strong ridge of high pressure parked over Western Canada is fuelling a prolonged heat wave, with Environment and Climate Change Canada expanding heat warnings across Alberta, Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories.
Daytime highs across Alberta are expected to climb above 30 C Wednesday, with overnight lows ranging from 10 to 16 C. On Tuesday, seven Alberta communities broke daily temperature records, including Edmonton (32.2 C), Grande Prairie (31.9 C) and Lac La Biche (30.1 C).
Calgary will see slightly breezier conditions Wednesday, with sustained winds near 20 km/h and gusts up to 40 km/h. Later in the week, there’s a small chance of thunderstorms developing along the foothills, but skies are otherwise expected to stay mostly clear.
The hot, dry weather is driving up wildfire risk. As of Wednesday morning, southern Alberta faced “extreme” fire danger in some areas, while much of the province was rated “very high.”
Forecasters expect the heat to persist into early next week, with Calgary reaching daytime highs of 28 to 30 C and overnight lows of 13 to 14 C—well above the seasonal norms of 21 C and 7 C.
