Motorcycle safety advocates are renewing calls for tougher measures to prevent rider deaths after a series of fatal crashes in Calgary this summer.
So far this year, Alberta has recorded 17 motorcycle fatalities — five of them in Calgary since June 8, according to the Alberta Motorcycle Safety Society (AMSS).
Liane Langlois, president of the AMSS, is urging governments at all levels to adopt a co-ordinated approach to motorcycle safety and include her organization in the discussions.
“We’re talking about a bunch of lawmakers who may or may not ride motorcycles, and sometimes laws get put into place without all of the angles looked at,” Langlois said. “We can present and advocate for our community.”
The AMSS has tracked motorcycle fatalities in Alberta for the past five years, analyzing whether collisions stemmed from rider or driver error. Langlois said their data shows more than 80 per cent of rider deaths are linked to rider error.
