Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc says he is leaving Washington with a sense of progress following a meeting with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.
LeBlanc’s office said the pair met for about 90 minutes on Tuesday in what it described as a constructive discussion, focusing on specific proposals now under consideration.
Further technical negotiations will be handled by Canada’s Ambassador to the U.S., Kirsten Hillman, and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.
The meeting came days after Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Canada would drop certain retaliatory tariffs in an effort to ease tensions and advance talks aimed at reducing U.S. duties on key Canadian sectors.
Canada continues to face American tariffs on steel, aluminum, automobiles and copper. LeBlanc has acknowledged that Ottawa’s counter-tariffs were a major sticking point with the Trump administration as the two countries work toward a new economic and security framework.
