Canada’s food inspection agency has issued a recall for more than two dozen pistachio-based products due to potential salmonella contamination, as part of an ongoing national investigation.
The recall was prompted by a probe launched earlier this month after a salmonella outbreak was linked to various brands of pistachios and pistachio-containing foods.
According to the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC), 62 laboratory-confirmed cases of salmonella have been reported across the country between March and early August 2025. At least 10 people have been hospitalized. However, health officials warn that the true number of infections is likely much higher.
“Many individuals with mild symptoms don’t seek medical attention and therefore aren’t tested,” PHAC said in a public notice. “Research suggests that for every confirmed case of salmonella, there are approximately 26 unreported cases.”
Earlier recalls this month included products from brands such as Habibi, Al Mokhtar Food Centre, Dubai, Andalos, Chocolats Favoris, Chocofolie, Chocolato, and Vincent Sélection. These were sold in Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia, and New Brunswick.
On Wednesday, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) added 27 more recalled items, specifically products sold in Ottawa from Pistachio Choco and La Brioche.
The CFIA says its food safety investigation is ongoing and could result in further recalls. It also confirmed that efforts are underway to ensure all affected products are removed from stores.
Contaminated pistachios may not show visible signs of spoilage but can still cause illness. Symptoms of salmonella infection include fever, nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, and headache. In some cases, long-term complications like severe arthritis can occur.
Consumers are advised to check their pantries and either discard any recalled products or return them to the place of purchase.
