The federal government has appointed a new envoy to India, more than 10 months after accusations of espionage and violence plunged relations between Ottawa and New Delhi into crisis.
Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand announced Thursday that veteran diplomat Christopher Cooter will serve as Canada’s next high commissioner to India.
“These appointments are an important step towards restoring necessary diplomatic services to citizens and businesses in both countries,” Anand’s office said.
On the same day, India named Dinesh K. Patnaik—currently ambassador to Spain—as its next high commissioner to Canada. New Delhi said he is expected to assume the post “shortly.”
The reciprocal moves come nearly a year after both countries expelled each other’s top envoys. That followed allegations from the RCMP that Indian officials were tied to a network of violence in Canada, including homicides and extortion.
Canadian officials have alleged that Indian diplomats were gathering intelligence on Canadians and sharing it with organized crime groups to facilitate attacks.
