The bodies of two 20-year-old men were recovered Wednesday evening after a double drowning in southeast Calgary’s Mahogany Lake.
Emergency crews were called to the community lake around 5 p.m. following reports of a possible drowning. When Calgary Fire Department (CFD) crews arrived near the Mahogany lake house dock, witnesses said they had seen a young man struggling in the water before going under.
Rescue teams used underwater cameras, search grids, and shallow dives to try to locate the individual. The Calgary Fire Department later requested assistance from the Southern Alberta Underwater Search Team (UST), which conducted a full SCUBA search.
During the search, police discovered personal belongings on the nearby beach, leading investigators to believe that a second individual was also missing in the water.
UST divers eventually located both men and brought them to shore, where they were pronounced dead at the scene.
Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the incident. Anyone with information is asked to contact Calgary police at 403-266-1234.
