Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre says he plans to engage with American lawmakers on Canada’s trade challenges, but only when the timing is right.
Speaking on The Elev8 Podcast Thursday, Poilievre said he intends to make the case for Canada and the broader North American partnership once he judges the moment is appropriate.
“At some point, at the appropriate time, we will be engaging with American lawmakers to make the case for Canada and to make the case for the North American relationship,” he said.
His comments come as Prime Minister Mark Carney makes negotiations with U.S. President Donald Trump over tariffs a central focus of his first months in office. Since April’s federal election, Carney has worked to secure a deal that could lower or eliminate U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods.
During that same campaign, Poilievre emphasized cost-of-living and crime concerns, drawing criticism from within Conservative ranks that he wasn’t pivoting quickly enough to address the critical Canada–U.S. trade file.
Unlike his predecessor Justin Trudeau, who promoted a “Team Canada” strategy in Washington, Poilievre chose not to endorse that approach. His caucus has also made only limited public remarks about Trump since the election.
