A new poll indicates that 44 per cent of Canadians support scrapping the Temporary Foreign Worker Program, amid growing concerns over high unemployment—particularly among young people.
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has recently called for the elimination of the program, citing rising joblessness among youth as a key reason.
The online survey, conducted by Abacus Data, found that support for ending the program is especially strong among younger Canadians. More than half of respondents aged 30 to 44, and 48 per cent of those aged 18 to 29, backed the idea. Regionally, support is highest in the Prairie provinces, while Québec and Atlantic Canada showed the least support.
Prime Minister Mark Carney has dismissed the idea of ending the program, stating that it will remain in place as part of an ongoing review of immigration policies.
The Canadian Research Insights Council notes that because the poll was conducted online and did not use a random sample, it cannot be assigned a margin of error.
