The Alberta government is calling on teachers to return to contract talks, while their union insists the province must move past a deal already rejected by educators.

Finance Minister Nate Horner said Monday that the government’s latest proposal demonstrates respect for teachers and should be reconsidered.

“We’ve never left the table,” Horner said in an interview. “We think this is a fair deal. We think this is a good deal.”

Talks broke down more than a week ago when the Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) walked away. Association president Jason Schilling said the union is ready to return but stressed the government must address concerns about classroom conditions and pay.

“There are always two hands on this steering wheel when we talk about bargaining,” Schilling said. “When you come to an impasse, it means that both sides are unwilling to move forward.”
