Automated traffic enforcement is being reintroduced at another Calgary intersection following approval from the Alberta government. The latest location is eastbound 16 Avenue at 10 Street NW.
This comes shortly after Calgary police confirmed the reinstatement of enforcement at two other locations: eastbound and westbound 16 Avenue at 68 Street NE, and eastbound and westbound Highway 1A at 12 Mile Coulee Road NW.
The return of automated enforcement follows a nine-month pause after the province imposed strict limits on photo radar and related tools. In December, the Alberta government banned photo radar on provincial highways and restricted Intersection Safety Devices (ISDs) to red light enforcement only on non-provincial roads. Speed-on-green enforcement was also removed as part of those changes.
Since then, Calgary Police Service (CPS), along with city officials including Mayor Jyoti Gondek, have pushed for those restrictions to be lifted, citing public safety concerns. CPS has formally requested permission to reinstate automated enforcement in several high-risk areas known for serious or fatal collisions.
The urgency behind these efforts is reflected in the city’s alarming road safety statistics. So far in 2025, Calgary has recorded 25 fatal collisions — nearly matching the total for all of 2024, which had 29 deaths and marked the highest number in a decade.
