As Canada faces an increasingly urgent housing crisis, internal government documents reveal the extent of the problem ahead of the launch of a new federal agency aimed at accelerating home construction.
Briefing materials prepared for Housing Minister Gregor Robertson in May warn that high housing costs are harming the economy and making it harder for Canadians to secure a place to live.
The documents also highlight a significant lack of investment in below-market housing, a gap that is disproportionately affecting newcomers and vulnerable populations.
According to government data, the average cost of building a home in Canada has surged by 58% since 2020 — a figure that may climb even higher due to U.S. tariffs.
In response, the federal government is preparing to roll out the Build Canada Homes agency. The new agency is tasked with speeding up the construction of affordable housing and promoting innovative building technologies among developers.
Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed during this week’s Liberal caucus retreat that the agency will be officially launched in the coming days.
