Salmonella outbreak linked to dog food sickens 27 people in Western Canada

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has reported 27 confirmed cases of salmonella in a recent outbreak tied to contaminated dog food and treats, with most cases occurring in Alberta and British Columbia.

Between mid-February and mid-August, there were,13 cases in Alberta,12 in British Columbia, 1 in Ontario, 1 in the Northwest Territories. Six people have been hospitalized, but no deaths have been reported.

While the CFIA has not yet identified the specific brand of contaminated dog food or treats, it is warning the public to be cautious. People can become infected with salmonella through direct contact with dogs, or by handling their food and treats—even if the pet shows no signs of illness.

The agency urges Canadians to wash their hands thoroughly after feeding pets or cleaning up after them.

Common symptoms of salmonella include, Fever, Chills, Nausea, Diarrhea, Vomiting, Headaches. These symptoms typically appear within 6 to 72 hours after exposure.

The CFIA also notes that the actual number of cases is likely higher than reported, as many people with mild symptoms may not seek medical attention or get tested.
