Calgary police say a shooting that took place Sunday evening in the city’s southwest is likely tied to a vehicle found on fire shortly afterward and may be connected to ongoing organized crime activity.

Officers were called to a parking lot near Macleod Trail and 53 Avenue SW around 5:30 p.m., after reports that a man had been shot. When they arrived, they found a man in his 20s with gunshot wounds. He was rushed to hospital in critical condition but has since been upgraded to stable.

Witnesses told police the suspect fled the scene in a black Hyundai Kona. Just 15 minutes later, a matching vehicle was discovered on fire in the Inglewood area in southeast Calgary. Fire crews put out the blaze, and police found the vehicle was using a stolen licence plate. It is now being examined for evidence.

Investigators believe the incident was a targeted shooting, linked to a broader organized crime conflict in the city.

“Many of these shootings are targeted, but it’s especially concerning when they occur in public spaces,” said Staff Sgt. Scott Campbell. “We’re taking this very seriously, and a large number of investigators will be working to identify those responsible.”

Police are asking the public for help, especially anyone with dashcam or surveillance footage from the area around the time of the shooting.
