Mounties are urging residents in communities around Calgary to stay alert following a recent surge in overnight residential break-ins.

Since late August, RCMP in Southern Alberta have received multiple reports of homes being targeted between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m.—while residents were asleep inside.

Investigators say suspects are entering through unlocked sliding doors and windows, often cutting through screens to slip in quietly. Once inside, they’re stealing easily accessible items such as purses, wallets, small electronics, and vehicle keys. In some cases, vehicles parked in driveways or garages have also been stolen.

As investigations continue, RCMP are encouraging the public to take extra precautions to help prevent future break-ins. Their safety recommendations include:

  • Installing pin locks on sliding doors and ground-level windows to secure them in place.
  • Keeping keys, wallets, and purses hidden—especially away from doors and windows.
  • Setting up security cameras and using motion-activated or timed exterior lighting.
  • Trimming shrubs and hedges below window height to eliminate hiding spots.
  • Adding pry guards to doors to deter forced entry.
  • Locking garage man doors, fences, and gates.
