Alberta remains the top destination for Canadians relocating within the country, though new data suggest the province’s surge in popularity may be easing.
Statistics Canada figures show Alberta gained a net 12,800 residents from other provinces in the first six months of 2025 — the largest increase in the country, but almost half the growth seen during the same period last year.
Much of the movement has been driven by the soaring cost of housing in Toronto and Vancouver, where prices have become “extraordinarily” expensive, said Alicia Planinchic, director of policy and economics at the Business Council of Alberta. In contrast, Alberta’s home prices have risen only modestly.
Since 2021, the province has added more than 88,000 new residents through interprovincial migration alone.
“The magnitude of what we were seeing, there was just no way that that was going to continue forever,” Planinchic said, adding the trend now appears to be “normalizing.”
