Industry Minister Mélanie Joly says the federal government will take a tougher stance on competition as part of its effort to address rising living costs.
Speaking at the Competition Bureau’s annual summit in Ottawa on Tuesday, Joly said boosting competition gives Canadians more choice and can help drive down prices.
She pointed to her August decision upholding a ruling that forces large telecom firms to provide services using their rivals’ networks, calling it an example of policies that strengthen competitive forces in the marketplace.
“Affordability is top of mind for Canadians, and competition is part of the solution,” Joly said.
The Competition Bureau, which oversees market fairness in Canada, has in recent years scrutinized concentration in the grocery and airline sectors.
Under the previous Liberal government, the bureau was granted expanded powers, including the ability to impose larger fines, investigate mergers more closely, and compel companies to hand over financial documents during market probes.
