The federal Liberal government has created a new agency aimed at overhauling how Canada buys military equipment, promising faster delivery and less red tape.
Prime Minister Mark Carney’s office announced the Defence Investment Agency (DIA) on Thursday, describing it as a long-promised effort to streamline defence procurement. The DIA will consolidate purchasing processes, reduce duplicative approvals, and provide the defence industry with more certainty about government priorities.
“In a dangerous and divided world, Canada’s new government is ensuring the Canadian Armed Forces get the equipment they need, when they need it,” Carney said in a written statement. “The new agency will bolster our defence industrial capacity, create new careers and ensure that in this new era, Canada’s leadership is not defined by the strength of our values, but also by the value of our strength.”
The agency will also be tasked with strengthening international partnerships. According to the government, it will work closely with allies such as the United Kingdom, Australia, and France, which already operate centralized procurement bodies — making joint purchases and collaboration more efficient.
