Alberta has confirmed its first measles-related death of 2025—a premature baby who passed away shortly after birth. The infant’s mother had contracted measles during pregnancy, leading to complications that resulted in the early delivery and subsequent death of the child.
Adriana LaGrange, Alberta’s Minister of Primary and Preventive Health Services, issued a public statement offering condolences to the grieving family. “This is a heartbreaking loss,” she said, stressing the dangers measles poses to vulnerable groups, including young children, pregnant individuals, and those with weakened immune systems.
LaGrange highlighted that measles infection during pregnancy can lead to serious outcomes such as miscarriage, preterm birth, stillbirth, or infection in the newborn.
She urged anyone planning to become pregnant to confirm they have received two doses of a measles-containing vaccine prior to conception, since the vaccine is not recommended during pregnancy.
Between January 1 and September 27, Alberta has recorded 1,910 confirmed measles cases. Among them, 152 people have been hospitalized and 15 are currently in intensive care.
Albertans unsure of their immunization history are encouraged to call Health Link at 811 or visit alberta.ca/measles for more information.
