Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek joined Calgary Red FM News Director Rishi Nagar for the station’s Know Your Candidate series, where she reflected on her four years in office and outlined her priorities should she be re-elected.
When asked how she would describe her term as mayor, Gondek said the past four years have been “a great opportunity to serve the city,” adding that she was grateful for the cooperation and support she received from Calgarians.
She also shared what a typical day looks like in her role, starting as early as 5 to 6:30 a.m. with answering emails and messages before moving on to meetings, community events, and unexpected challenges. She pointed to the recent city water main break as an example of an urgent issue that required her full attention.
Reflecting on her achievements, Gondek highlighted securing $256 million in federal funding to support Calgary’s housing strategy, which she said has gained national recognition. She also noted Calgary’s growing role in Housing Strategy as Number One City.
Looking ahead, Gondek said she intends to advance a bylaw restricting open drug use, invest more in road and pothole repairs, and improve resources for the fire department.
When asked about property tax increases of nearly 20 per cent during her term, Gondek responded that her original approach in 2022 was to align budget growth with population and inflation. However, she said the provincial government did not provide the necessary support to achieve that goal.
The mayor also pointed to Calgary’s economic outlook, citing information from the Calgary Construction Association that more than $15 billion worth of construction projects are expected in the city over the next three to five years.
Gondek concluded the interview by thanking her supporters, well-wishers, and all Calgarians for their continued trust.
